Dong Koo Kim

About Mr. Kim

Mr. Kim first became aware of the value of education as a young child in South Korea in the early 1950’s. As North Korean forces moved into his homeland, he and his family, along with many others, were forced to leave their homes in Seoul, the country’s capital city. Leaving all of their assets behind as they fled during the invasion, his family moved from one village to another, continually seeking refuge. Temporary schools and shelters were available, and he, along with many others, gratefully received the benefit of these educational opportunities.

It was not until much later that Kim became aware that the temporary schools he had attended as a child, had been provided by American missionaries. Kim remembers with great gratitude, “Even after the war, most of our textbooks, pencils, and notebooks came from these American missionaries.” The education he received in Korea greatly affected him on a spiritual level.  He leads his life in appreciation of the efforts of the dedicated teachers that opened  doors for him throughout his life.

Kim began BP Industries, Inc. in 1986, a company specializing in the international trade of consumer products. His corporation became a rapid success, and is now one of the premier home-décor vendors in the U.S.  In 2003, to further his desire to help those in need of assistance accomplish their life-goals, Mr. Kim founded the D.K. Kim Foundation, Inc. (a 501(c)3 organization). As the missionary teachers had made a difference for him, Mr. Kim was driven by a strong desire to support students who wished to fulfill their potential through higher education. He continues to support students through his Foundation by providing generous scholarships and charitable giving to universities and seminaries.

To further his impact in helping others, he has carefully studied how to maximize the impact of his giving, and has concluded that the most productive way to offer assistance is through supporting schools and churches. Mr. Kim believes there is particular value to assisting future leaders by helping foreign students, many of whom do not have adequate educational opportunities in their own countries. He greatly desires to assist others by providing educational opportunities, as others have helped him in the past.

Some of his charitable gifts have assisted foreign students accepted to the prestigious Haas School of Business program at the University of California at Berkeley. There, he has helped create a distance-learning classroom, primarily for use by students enrolled in the Executive MBA program at the Center for Executive Development.

Mr. Kim is committed to the belief that his gifts to charities and schools are investments in the future. Admittedly, there are many worthy social causes in which Mr. Kim could chose to participate – all worthy of providing great benefits to society. However, after careful consideration and evaluation of the many available opportunities, he judiciously chose education as being an unparalleled endeavor. Mr. Kim believes that investing in education has the unequaled potential to ultimately make the largest and most significant long-term impact upon society. “My ultimate goal is to improve human life through higher education. It is my firm belief that students who pursue higher education have proven to be assets to society. I believe that giving is an investment to society where returns can be broadly maximized.”

Fostering the development of the next generation of world leaders is a task that is monumental, but not impossible. As a Christian businessman, D.K. Kim’s vision is to help develop the kind of leaders who will impact society and foster healthy, responsible leadership to positively impact the future. Mr. Kim is dedicated to the effort of “preparing students – generation after generation – for the tasks of today and the challenges of tomorrow.
